His real name is Roderick (but Kick for friends; that’s where the artist name comes from). I live just north of Amsterdam, traditionally one of the hotspots for electronic dance music in our country. And during the Amsterdam Dance Event, the dance capital of the world.
I come from a family where music has always been a part of our lives. Through radio and cassette tapes from my brother, I was introduced to the very first house sounds from Detroit and Chicago and the early Acid House. In late 1992, at the age of fifteen, the release of The Prodigy—The Experience changed my life forever.
Throughout the ’90s, my interest in all kinds of dance music kept growing, from commercial and Eurodance to big beat, chemical, acid, and even hardstyle (gabber). I even organized my own (semi-legal) rave in one of my father’s warehouses. There are still people reminding me about those great times.
Later, I kept my interest in the scene and music styles, picking it up in a more active way when the first DJs started performing in stadiums and at major festivals. Back then, I closely followed Tiësto, Carl Cox, and Fatboy Slim.
But I was always more of a listener/consumer and organizer than a creator. Until almost four years ago, when I touched my first controller. For the first time in my life, I felt like I could truly create something myself. I took a deep dive down that rabbit hole, and here we are, hosting a weekly radio show on this great online dance station and organising the finest dance events in the region.
